How long does it take for the rapid test results?
Rapid tests are done for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Trichomoniasis and Bacterial Vaginosis. The results of rapid tests are available in 10 to 20 minutes. They are slightly less sensitive but very specific which means that if your results are negative by rapid test it is almost definite that the condition is not present.
What about lab tests?
Lab tests are done for Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis, HIV, HPV Typing, HSV serology, Hepatitis B and C, HTLV1 and 2. They are less specific but very sensitive which means if the results are positive then it is very likely the condition is present.
When do I get the results from lab tests?
The results of HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Chlamydia are available in less than 24 hours. Gonorrhoea cultures take 24 to 48 hours.
Why do I require lab tests as well as rapid tests?
In the presence of symptoms and risk factors most infections would be treated as routine to prevent the possible spread of the STI, and could be treated on basis of rapid tests results. However some conditions like HIV infection which have long term implications need to be confirmed with lab tests. Lab tests are four to five times more expensive than rapid tests. Lab test results are available in 24 hours.
